The Country park is a Site of Special Scientific Interest with its unspoilt heath, grassland and intricate mosaic of acid and chalky soils.
On the heath and meadows, you may see the herd of semi-wild Exmoor ponies. These ponies are descended from Britain’s natural wild pony of 130,000 years ago.
Knettishall Heath is the hub of long distance paths in the region:
Peddars Way – is a 95 mile walk, following the Roman road to the North Norfolk coast. Peddars is a corruption of pedlars. The travelling sales reps of the past. A new bus route starts at Easter 2005 connecting villages along the route.
Icknield Way – claimed to be the oldest route in Britain, dating back to about 4,000BC. This path takes you 120 miles to Buckinghamshire
Angles Way – by following the valley of the Little Ouse and Waveney Rivers, the Angles Way goes from the Brecks to the Broads. It is 77 miles long, finishing at Great Yarmouth.
A network of circular, waymarked trails help you to explore the different habitats of the country park.
Red heathland trail – 1 mile (30 minutes)
Green Heathland trail – 2.5 miles (1 hour 30 minutes)
Riverside Trail 1.5 miles (45 minutes_
Woodland trail – 2.5 miles (1 hour 30 minutes)
Location – 6 miles east of Thetford. It is signposted from the A1066, B1088 in Euston village and B1111 in Barningham. 2 car parks.
Information office open Sundays and Bank Holiday Mondays. pre-arranged visits, toilets (Radar Key) for disabled visitors, School visits and events.
