 | | A Call to Action to Save Breckland’s Unique Biodiversity | |
 | | | | Breckland is of outstanding importance for UK Biodiversity
This project demonstrates that there are more then 12,500 species in the Brecks, of which nearly two thousand are of national conservation concern- many more then previously realised. A total of 28% of all the priority Biodiversity Action Plan species in the UK occur in the Brecks.
To conserve this valuable biodiversity, we propose new evidence-based approaches to conservation
Building on existing practices, we have demonstrated the dynamic ecological processes that must be integrated into conservation management in Breckland, on designated sites, forestry, and arable land. As part of a landscape-scale vision, this will deliver resilient networks that integrate the needs of diverse species assemblages.
We have developed a powerful new methodology that can be applied elsewhere
For the first time, we have a fully comprehensive and systematic review of Breckland’s biodiversity: what there is, where it is, what the conservation needs are. We synthesised the understanding of over two hundred taxonomic and land management experts. Such an approach has never before been attempted on this scale in the UK.
